Giving back & Our Community

Coping with a serious illness can be frightening, not only for the person diagnosed with the disease, but for their loved ones. A diagnosis of a serious or chronic illness often takes entire families by surprise. However, choosing to contact Hospice of the Western Reserve isn’t about giving up. It’s about taking control.

Dorothy’s Porch

Dorothy has been a client for many years. I met her originally when she responded to a mailer offering help on insurance based accounts. This was about ten years ago. Over the years Dorothy has shared her experiences helping the less fortunate in her rural county. Her focus is providing household items used daily by family’s. Dorothy collects the items from a network of like-minded friends. The items can be dropped off anytime on Dorothy’s Porch, the inspiration for the name of the non-profit. The items are available each day on her porch or one weekend each quarter at her church. All items are free and no donations are accepted.

Dorothy’s old Subaru needed replacing after 12 years and 158,000 miles. She purchased a used Jeep from Classic Ford in Mentor. They were moved by her story and donated lunch for the next distribution at her church later this month.
